Understanding Menopause

Menopause is real; there are physical, emotional and mental changes that take control over you. You cannot stop these changes, or rationalize them away, these changes control you, and you do not control them. For the longest time Menopause has been referred to as the "change of life" signaling the end of a woman's reproductive years and a solid welcome into middle age dull drums. Most women believe menopause is just another way for mother nature to say "turn in your dancing shoes for aerosols." Eve Womenís Medical Anti-Aging and Longevity Centers, believes nothing is further from the truth, this is the time for climbing up the hill and not the time to be driving over the hill. This is the time to fight back, help us help you.

Talk with us so you can be prepared when menopause arrives. Women may experience a wide range of feelings, from anxiety, discomfort, depression, to release and relief. Mood swings can come and go without warning. Menopause is also associated with sexual difficulties relating to: mood, pain during intercourse and delayed or inhibited orgasm.

An understanding of the body's changes during this phase of life can ease the transition, and equally important, better prepare you to safeguard your health during your later years. There are many options available today for women approaching menopause. Specific treatment for menopausal symptoms will be determined by our board certified physicians trained in Gynecology and Anti-aging and Integrated Medicine s, which may be based on:

  • Your age, overall health, and medical history
  • Current symptoms
  • Your tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
  • Your opinion or preference

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Menopause affects every woman differently changes may occur slowing over time. Your menstruation cycle may become irregular, spotting, pain, weight gain, bursts of anger, sleeplessness, and aversion to your spouses snoring. You may have other symptoms, too. Many symptoms at this time of life happen because you are getting older, some are due to menopause. Itís not always possible to tell if symptoms are related to aging, menopause, or both. Some changes you might notice as you near menopause include:

  • Change in pattern of periods (They can be shorter or longer, lighter or heavier, or there may be more or less time between periods.)
  • Hot flashes (sometimes called hot flushes), night sweats (sometimes followed by a chill)
  • Trouble sleeping through the night (with or without night sweats)
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Mood swings, feeling crabby, or crying spells
  • Trouble focusing, "fuzzy thinking," or forgetfulness
  • Hair loss or thinning on your head or more hair growth on your face

Dropping estrogen levels around the time of menopause also leads to bone loss in women. Estrogen helps to build and maintain bone. After menopause, bone loss speeds up for several years as estrogen levels rapidly decrease. Bone loss can cause bones to weaken. Weak bones can break more easily. When bones weaken a lot, the condition is called osteoporosis (OSS-tee-oh-puh-ROH-suhss).

Today, women entering menopause can be healthier, feel younger than their years, and lead more active lives and careers than previous generations. And this is What Eve Women’s Medical Center wants to provide for you despite the fears and anxiety associated with what menopause may bring.
